New Study Permit Pathways for International Students

Canada has expanded the pathways available to international students, making it significantly easier to move from studying to working to permanent residence.

The most notable change is a series of province-specific nominations that reward graduates of Canadian institutions. Graduates who complete a program of at least two years and gain qualifying work experience can now access faster processing under the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP).

Key benefits for students

  • Work while studying: Eligible full-time students can work up to 20 hours per week during term.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): Program length now matches study duration for most programs.
  • PR pathways: Canadian study and work experience earn significant extra CRS points under Express Entry.
